A new report has been issued by the charity commission. The report is called “charities back on track” and covers the themes and lessons from their compliance and investigation work for 2010-11. It shows that the number of serious incidents being reported has risen from 451 in 2009-10 to 849 in 2010-11. The largest proportion of reports concerned fraud and theft (371), followed by issues relating to vulnerable beneficiaries (337), and reports of charities subject to investigation by another body (75).

The full text of the report can be found here:

The majority of concerns are raised by the Trustees themselves.  3 out of 4 concerns raised that led to an assessment case were raised by external sources including the general public, trustees and other regulators and government agencies.

The report explains that the Charity Commission have taken action against charities that have not submitted annual accounts. They have also scrutinised 277 sets of accounts on a risk basis. In addition they have taken enforcement action on 108 charities for not submitting annual accounts. Of those, 68% subsequently did submit accounts, 27% were removed from the Register of Charities as further evidence materialised that they were no longer operating, and the remaining 5% were referred for further investigation.

All information correct at time of posting.
