How we're trying to help

Every business has an important role to play in preserving and protecting the environment. At Bishop Fleming we understand the importance of sustainability in business. We are serious about our responsibilities to the local communities in which we operate, as well as to the environment at large.

We have formed a sustainability policy to focus our efforts and to provide targets to work towards. We commit to a programme of continued review and improvement of our policies.

Our policy:

To reduce energy consumption

  • Raise awareness amongst employees of ways to preserve energy.
  • Limit our energy usage outside of office hours by switching off lights and equipment overnight.
  • Encourage the use of energy efficient equipment, and promote the energy efficiency of our premises, where we can have influence.

To promote recycling of waste and reduction in paper usage

  • Continue to use paperless audit files.
  • Roll out the use of paperless tax files to the whole firm.
  • Review the structure of remaining files, with a view to reducing paper usage in the short term, and switching to paperless file across the board in the long term.
  • Continue to use a supplier who provides recycling of confidential waste.
  • Review the disposal of other waste with a view to increasing recycling.

To promote reduced travel wherever possible

  • Encourage car sharing in journeys from home to the office, by offering car sharers free parking outside the office, in offices where this is possible.
  • Actively encourage car sharing when travelling to the same destination, and incentivise staff to do this where possible.
  • Encourage telephone conferencing rather than travel to meetings, where practical.

To review our supply chain and commit to ethical purchasing where possible

  • Use local suppliers wherever practical, to decrease transport costs, and to support the local community.
  • Review the sustainability credentials of current suppliers.
  • Take into account sustainability policies when considering potential new suppliers.

To positively contribute to our local communities

  • Continue to encourage staff to arrange fundraising events to support local charities.
  • Continue to sponsor local charities on an office by office basis, donating assistance and support.
  • Continue to donate time to and participate in local advice networks, which offer free of charge advice to local people in need.
  • Continue to offer excellent training support and personal development opportunities to employees, as demonstrated by our Investors In People status.
  • Continue to promote diversity and equality, inline with our Equal Opportunities policy.

To continue to develop our business in an economically stable way

  • Continue to run systems that allow us to manage our business successfully on a day to basis.
  • Continue to formulate and follow business plans that promote both stability and growth for the future.
