When you are considering a career in accountancy you have to ask yourself three questions:

Do I want to be a chartered or certified accountant, an accounting technician or a tax specialist?

What qualifications do I need before I can start my training?

Where can I do my training?

There is little between the skills and knowledge of the different types of accountant - the difference is the style of the training you will receive.

You can start your professional training at one of three levels:

GCSE or 'A' level entry: You can begin your training with the minimum five GCSEs or two 'A' levels. If you do, you can either work towards an accounting or taxation technician qualification (AAT or ATT) which will take two or three years and then you can continue with your training as if a graduate with a relevant degree. Alternatively, with 'A' levels you can begin studying for the chartered or certified qualifications straightaway - normally a five year process.

We have found that qualified AAT trainees with graduate academic ability have done very well following on with ACA training.

If you have already completed a degree then you can begin studying for chartered, certified or tax qualifications (ACA, ACCA or ATII) immediately. Your training would normally take three years to complete. There are opportunities to train in Bishop Fleming's Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, Torquay or Truro office, where there is a wide range of clients from large corporations to small owner manager entrepreneurial businesses, located all across the West country.

Unlike other accountants, Bishop Fleming has dedicated all of its resources to helping the people and businesses of the South West to succeed - and this includes our own staff. We were the first firm of accountants to receive the coveted Investor In People award for our high training standards and personnel policies, and have now held this for over 15 years.
