Earn, learn + build your future

You don’t need to go to university to start a professional career in accountancy.

Our Level 7 apprenticeship programme gives you the opportunity to earn a salary, gain experience with real clients and work towards a recognised professional qualification.

You’ll learn from experienced colleagues, explore different areas of the firm and receive support every step of the way as you build your skills and shape your future career.

A professional qualification + real experience

We don’t take a standard approach to early careers. That’s why our unique, business-focused Launch Pad programme is designed to kickstart your accounting career.

Over four years, you’ll work towards a Level 7 apprenticeship, which is the equivalent of a Master's degree! You’ll receive a funded study of the recognised ACA qualification, as well as the CTA qualification, if you settle into our Tax team.

You’ll gain real experience, working on real client projects across a variety of industries and sectors.

I wanted to complete an accounting qualification whilst working, rather than going to university. The technical knowledge I gained from my studies complemented the invaluable practical experience I gained from working.

Explore different career paths

You can join us as a School Leaver on one of two streams.

You will either join in Audit, our largest and fastest growing department, where you’ll be gaining hands-on experience with clients from day one! Or, if you’re unsure which area of accountancy you’re best suited to, you can join our rotational programme, offering you the opportunity to experience multiple teams before settling into a department.

Either way, you’ll work with a wide array of sectors, and as your experience grows, so will the level of responsibility that you have.

Depending on the route you choose, you will gain experience in:

  • Preparing and reviewing financial information
  • Supporting audit assignments
  • Researching accounting and tax issues
  • Working with different types of businesses and organisations
  • Communicating with clients and colleagues
  • Using financial and digital systems
  • Solving practical business problems

Support from your first day

Starting your first professional role is a big step. We’ll help you settle in and understand what to expect.

Your apprenticeship will begin with an induction where you’ll meet colleagues from across the business (even our Managing Partner and CEO!). It’s a great opportunity not just to learn about Bishop Fleming and find out how to balance work, study and wellbeing, but also to start building your professional network.

We’ll pair you up with an experienced apprentice who’ll be your buddy. They’ll be able to answer your questions, share practical advice and help you adjust to working life.

As part of a wider apprentice group, you’ll have a network of people who are learning and progressing alongside you.

And each office has its own social committee. So, there’s always something to get involved in. We’re also incredibly proud that our programme has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted, so you’ll receive support and training you can trust.

Ongoing professional development

Your development extends beyond exams and qualifications.

We’ve designed our programme to help you build the expertise you need to be a future leader in the firm. It’s far more than a technical qualification. Your learning starts on day one and never stops.

Your manager will make sure you have every opportunity to learn and shine on real client projects, so you’ll constantly be building your professional business skills.

You’ll spend time at college each year preparing for exams and working towards the ACA or ACA/CTA qualification. You’ll also have training days and coaching in a whole range of softer skills, too. From networking to negotiation, personal branding to professional ethics. Plus, once you’ve qualified, we’ll give you all the support you need to continue building your career with us.

You’ll also develop broader professional skills, including:

  • Commercial awareness
  • Communication and relationship building
  • Networking
  • Negotiation
  • Professional ethics
  • Digital and analytical skills
  • Managing your time and responsibilities

As you gain experience and confidence, you'll have opportunities to broaden your skills and explore new challenges. Learn more about development, wellbeing, and employee benefits on what we can offer you.

The apprentice route meant that I could jump-start my career without going to university, and in fact would be qualified about a year faster than if I did attend university.

What we’re looking for

We’re not looking for maths or accountancy specialists. That might sound strange coming from an accountancy firm, but we’re more than accountants. We see ourselves as business advisers, and, more importantly, so do our clients. We’re particularly interested in:

  • A genuine enthusiasm for business
  • The ability to analyse data
  • Confidence working with numbers
  • Strong communication skills
  • An interest in building client relationships
  • A willingness to learn and take responsibility
  • A commitment to doing the right thing

You can find the specific academic entry requirements on the vacancy listings.
