MAT VAT MOT: Your Multi-Academy Trust VAT health check

VAT clarity and confidence for Multi-Academy Trusts.

13 April 2026

Is your Trust confident about its VAT position?

Multi‑Academy Trust VAT is complex, and small errors can lead to costly HMRC challenges. Our MAT VAT MOT workshop is designed to give Multi-Academy Trusts clarity and confidence around VAT compliance. We can help you understand the VAT treatment of your income and guide you through the principles of business/non-business apportionment and partial exemption - whether you’re submitting VAT126 claims or already VAT registered.

What is a MAT VAT MOT?

A MAT VAT MOT is a focused VAT review delivered as an interactive workshop. It’s a practical, hands-on training session that examines your Trust’s income streams, clarifies the VAT treatment and provides actionable insights to keep you compliant and informed.

What’s included in the MOT?

  • Income stream review

During the workshop we’ll work through your trial balance and identify non-business, exempt, and VATable turnover across your Trust’s activities.

  • VAT treatment guidance

We’ll give advice on your Trust’s key income streams, such as:

-    Lettings (room hire, sports facilities, leisure centre arrangements)
-    Management charges
-    Staff supplies (consultancy, school improvement, teaching staff)
-    Nursery income
-    Miscellaneous income (uniform sales, photography commissions, prom tickets)
-    Trips and any other flagged income streams

  • BNB & partial exemption walkthrough

For Trusts submitting VAT126 claims, we’ll conclude with an illustrative example of a business/non-business (BNB) apportionment. If VAT registration appears likely or for academies that are already VAT registered, we’ll walk through a combined BNB and partial exemption calculation

  • MOT-style report

After the session, we’ll provide a detailed report summarising the VAT treatment of each income stream, including examples discussed during the workshop. The report will feature detailed commentary alongside traffic‑light indicators to highlight areas requiring attention (see below).

  • Follow-up call

We’ll arrange a 30-minute follow-up call to answer questions and close out any outstanding points.

Why choose a MAT VAT MOT?

  • Stay Compliant: Understand your VAT obligations and avoid unexpected liabilities, demonstrating compliance to HMRC and preventing risk of VAT errors building up over time.
  • Gain Clarity: Identify which income streams count towards VAT registration thresholds - and if you’re already VAT registered, understand the difference between non-business, taxable, and exempt income.
  • Training: Upskill relevant staff on VAT accounting.
  • Empower Your Team: Gain practical tools and examples to manage VAT confidently which can be referred back to in future.
  • Mitigate penalties: Reduce the risk of penalties for VAT errors.

How it works

  • Intro: An initial scoping call to gather info on the Trust’s VAT position (registered or VAT126), any trading subsidiaries, main income streams and areas of concern.
  • Format: Half-day interactive workshop (remote or onsite) led by an experienced academy VAT specialist.
  • Deliverable: Delivery of an MOT-style report and a follow-up call to ensure understanding and knowledge transfer.
