Growth survey – recruitment on the rise in the South West

Recruitment is on the rise in the South West, with three out of five businesses in the region planning to recruit in the next twelve months as part of their growth plans, according to a new survey.

The survey, independently conducted by insider magazine and sponsored by Bishop Fleming, asked the region’s businesses how they were planning to grow.

Over 60 per cent of those responding said they were going to recruit more staff, with over a third of those in the survey said they were also looking to train their existing people.

The high number of firms looking to recruit is great news for the region’s employment statistics, which are already the best in the UK according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, which shows the South West at nearly 80 per cent employment.

A small number of businesses also highlighted outsourcing, acquisition, or entering into a joint venture or partnership as ways to grow.

The survey reveals that businesses are continuing to invest in people in order to resource their growth prospects.

With Brexit on the horizon and the possibility of restrictions on recruiting from the EU after 29 March 2019, firms will need to recruit talent from the UK, which may in some cases mean having to incur higher rates of pay.
