What is an external audit and why do businesses need one?

Independent assurance your financial statements are accurate, compliant, and trusted.

Does your business need an external audit? Here’s what you need to know.

An external audit is a simple yet powerful way for a business to ensure its financial statements are accurate, trustworthy, and compliant. By having an independent auditor review your accounts, you gain reassurance that the numbers accurately reflect your business's performance.

This added level of confidence helps strengthen trust with shareholders, lenders, and other stakeholders and gives business owners clearer insight to support better decision‑making.

An external audit is an independent, third‑party review of a company’s financial statements. Its purpose is to check whether the accounts give a true and fair view of the organisation’s financial position and whether they have been prepared in line with applicable accounting standards and company law.

External auditors examine financial records, assess risks of misstatement, and issue an audit opinion that stakeholders can rely on for accuracy, transparency, and compliance.

An audit provides independent assurance that a company’s financial information is accurate, reliable, and compliant, while also helping businesses manage risk, improve controls, build credibility, and support better decision‑making and long‑term growth.

External auditors focus on identifying where the financial statements could contain errors or misstatements. Their role typically includes:

  • Risk assessment: Determining which areas of the accounts carry a higher risk of error or fraud.
  • Evidence gathering: Reviewing supporting documents such as invoices, contracts, bank confirmations, payroll data, stock listings, loan agreements and legal letters.
  • Sampling: Using statistical sampling to test selected transactions and balances (rather than checking 100% of them).
  • Applying materiality: Using a “materiality” threshold to prioritise which balances or errors could influence a stakeholder’s decision.

Their findings contribute to the final audit opinion, offering assurance that the financial statements are prepared correctly.

Although both internal and external audits support good governance, they serve very different purposes:

Purpose

  • External audit: Provides independent assurance to shareholders and stakeholders that the financial statements are accurate and compliant.
  • Internal audit: Focuses on evaluating and improving internal processes, risk management, and operational effectiveness.

Who performs the audit

  • External audit: Conducted by an independent audit firm with no connection to the organisation.
  • Internal audit: Carried out by internal employees or an outsourced internal audit provider.

Scope

  • External audit: Centres on financial statements.
  • Internal audit: Covers wider business operations such as controls, risk processes, compliance, and organisational efficiency.
