Customs Declaration Service extension for Importers

From 1 October 2022, UK importers have to use the Customs Declaration Service for import declarations, unless they have an extension to carry on using the CHIEF system.

20 September 2022

From 1 October 2022, UK importers have to use the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) for import declarations, as access to the CHIEF system is due to end.

In recognition that some businesses are having problems in moving to CDS, HMRC has launched an online service where importers can request an extension to continue using CHIEF beyond 30 September where there is a clear business reason.

You need to apply using an online form on the gov.uk website.

If you continue to use CHIEF without permission after 30 September, HMRC may remove access.

Customs Agents

Import declarations need to be made using the CDS from 1 October 2022, but businesses that cannot be ready by that date could also consider using a customs agent.

There is a list on the gov.uk website.
